This is a really fast way of making a dark lightning sky. Good for lazy backgrounds. *cough* not that I know anything about that.

Nice tutorial.

But how do you put this on a transparent layer so you can apply it to other layers?

Like a cloud background?

you could also mask it then use the gradient tool (set on black to transparent) to fade away the black until only the lightning shows. Thats what I did.

Taking the whole thing and setting the mode to Screen (in PS) will usually work pretty well :3
